What is a vape pen?

A vape pen is a compact, handheld device that pairs a battery with a cartridge filled with cannabis concentrate—or, in some models, ground cannabis flower. Unlike traditional smoking methods, vape pens heat the concentrate just enough to release potent cannabinoids and terpenes as vapor rather than smoke, offering a smoother, more refined experience.

Similar to nicotine vapes, cannabis vape pens use a power source to heat the cartridge, producing inhalable vapor. When you purchase a vape from Eaze, it will come pre-filled with high-quality distillate or other concentrate, typically showcasing the signature golden hue found in products like dab oil.

Why use a vape pen?

What’s the advantage of a vape pen over smoking? The benefits are plenty! They’re portable, discreet, and incredibly convenient—it’s far easier to pause and take a quick hit off a pen compared to grinding up flower and rolling a joint or lighting up a bowl. Plus, their sleek, pen-sized design makes them easy to tote around with you.

Vape pens are also considered a safer alternative to combustion methods, such as pipes or joints, as they don’t emit the harmful toxins associated with smoking, resulting in a healthier option for your lungs. However, safety concerns have been raised about counterfeit or tampered cartridges, making it crucial to buy from trusted sources—it’s essential to source your cartridges from FDA-approved brands.

Luckily, Eaze partners with reputable brands that prioritize safety and rigorously test their products, ensuring you can explore our vape selection with confidence.

Types of weed vape pens and how to use them

There are several types of vape pens, and while they all work similarly, it’s helpful to understand their differences. Here are the most common categories.

Autodraw vape pens

If you’re looking to ease your way into the vape life, autodraw pens are beginner-friendly. Once you insert or screw in your cartridge, all you have to do is inhale from the mouthpiece and enjoy smooth, clean vapor instantly. Hold it in for a second or two before exhaling to take full advantage of the pen’s tasty strain. While vaping will feel milder on your airways than smoking, it’s best to start low and go slow as you get used to the vapor output.

Push-to-activate vape pens

These vape options cater to experienced users who want more control over their hits. While they require more interaction than autodraw pens, they offer the advantage of customizable sessions. Many feature adjustable voltage settings, allowing you to fine-tune your experience—lower temperatures enhance terpene expression, while higher temperatures boost cannabinoid potency.

While some brands require proprietary batteries, many use the universal 510 thread, making them compatible with most standard cartridges, including those from Circles, Heavy Hitters, and Jetty. Though each brand and model varies slightly, most button-operated pens follow a simple process:

  1. Click the button five times in rapid succession to fire up the battery. The device should flash, indicating that it is powered on.
  2. Press twice for the oil to heat, wait a few seconds, then inhale while holding the button.
  3. When you’re done, power off by clicking the button five times again.

A quick heads-up—pulling too hard or too long can lead to getting too high, even for seasoned users! So, like with autodraw pens and other vape pen styles, start low and go slow to get the most out of your experience.

All-in-one or disposable vape pens

Convenient, hassle-free, and perfect for on-the-go, all-in-one (AIO) vapes are another excellent option for beginners. Available in both push-button or autodraw styles, these devices come with a built-in battery and pre-filled cartridge—no charging or additional maintenance is required. Since they typically contain less than 0.5g of concentrate, you can enjoy them for a few sessions and simply toss them when finished. Simple, smooth, and stress-free!

How much do vape pens cost?

Depending on style, options, and other factors, cannabis vape pens can range from $7 to around $350. The options are endless—and so are the price tags, so you can experience smooth vapor no matter your budget.

How to charge and maintain a vape pen

Charging times vary by model and brand, but most vape pens take 30 minutes to 4 hours to fully charge, typically via a standard USB port. No matter the style, always charge your device in an upright position.

Why? Keeping it upright helps prevent leaks by stopping the liquid concentrate from seeping into the mouthpiece—avoiding a sticky mess.

That said, leaks can still happen, and occasional cleaning is key. If the unit can be disassembled, use a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol to clean the screw-on threads—like in a 510-style cartridge—as well as any external areas that might have gotten liquid cannabis concentrate on them.

How to unclog your vape pen

Clogged vape pens happen—it’s frustrating but fixable! Most clogs occur in the mouthpiece. One common cause is what’s known as “chain vaping,” or repeated hits taken in a very short timeframe, which can happen when you’re passing a vape pen around among friends.

When the cannabis oil stays hot, it can flow into the mouthpiece and harden, blocking airflow. Here’s how to unclog a vape pen mouthpiece:

  1. Unscrew the mouthpiece and cartridge from the rest of the unit.
  2. Use an unbent paperclip (or similar tool) and gently insert it into the mouthpiece, working it around the circumference of the opening. Do not insert the paperclip more than half an inch to avoid damaging the internal components.
  3. You should find a small gob of cannabis oil on the paperclip. Wipe off the excess oil, reassemble your pen, and test your vape.

Clogging is less common in vape pens that use ground flower rather than concentrates, but resin buildup can still jam airflow. To prevent this, disassemble and clean your device every few sessions. Soak any detachable screens in rubbing alcohol before swabbing them down with a soft brush or cotton swab. For the combustion chamber, skip the rubbing alcohol—just wipe it clean to avoid damaging the heating element.
